The New Benagil Cave Rules You Need to Know First
If you’ve been researching Benagil Cave, you’ve probably come across photos of people standing on the beach inside the cave. Those photos are now outdated.
In recent years, Portuguese authorities introduced new rules to improve safety and better manage the growing number of visitors. That means a few things have changed.
- You cannot get off on the beach inside Benagil Cave.
- Independent access by kayak or stand-up paddleboard is no longer permitted. You must join a licensed guided tour.
- Swimming to the cave is strongly discouraged because of heavy boat traffic, ocean currents, and changing sea conditions.
- Boats, kayaks, and paddleboards can still enter the cave, but visitors must remain with their guide and follow instructions.

Can you still go inside Benagil Cave?
Yes, but only on a licensed tour. Boat, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard tours are still allowed to enter Benagil Cave, but visitors must follow the current regulations. You’re no longer permitted to get off on the beach inside the cave, and independent access by kayak or SUP is restricted.
Can you swim to Benagil Cave?
Technically, some people still do, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The cave sits about 200 metres from Benagil Beach, and the route crosses an area used by tour boats throughout the day. It’s how I visited Benagil Cave, and I loved being able to explore the coastline at a slower pace. If you’d rather stay dry or you’re travelling with children, I’d recommend a small boat tour. It gives you excellent views of the cave while requiring very little effort.
What’s the best time of day to visit Benagil Cave?
Early morning is usually the best time. The sea is often calmer, temperatures are cooler, and there are typically fewer boats than around midday during the busy season. Sunset tours are another great option if you’re hoping for softer light for photography.
How long does a Benagil Cave tour last?
Most tours last between 1.5 and 4 hours, depending on where they depart from and whether you choose a boat or kayak tour. Tours leaving from Armação de Pêra tend to be the shortest because they’re located very close to the cave. Tours from Lagos usually take a little longer but cover a much larger stretch of coastline.
What should I bring on a Benagil Cave tour?
I’d recommend bringing sunglasses, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a hat, especially if you’re visiting during the warmer months. A waterproof phone case or dry bag is also a good idea to protect your belongings from splashes, particularly on kayak and paddleboarding tours. If you’re visiting outside of summer, pack a light jacket, as it can feel surprisingly cool once you’re out on the water, even on sunny days. Finally, if your tour includes a swimming stop, don’t forget your swimsuit and a towel.
Can you see Benagil Cave without a tour?
Yes. One of my favourite free viewpoints in the Algarve is the clifftop above Benagil Cave, where you can look down through the famous opening in the cave’s roof. It’s a short walk from Benagil Beach and forms part of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, one of the Algarve’s best coastal hikes.
The cave’s famous circular opening is visible from the clifftop, giving you a completely different perspective than you’ll get from the water. It’s free to visit and only takes about 15 or 20 minutes if you’re already in the area.
The viewpoint is located along the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, one of the Algarve’s most popular coastal hikes. If you have extra time before or after your tour, it’s well worth combining the two experiences.
To reach the viewpoint, walk up the hill from Benagil Beach toward the restaurant O Algar. From there, you’ll find a dirt path leading onto the trail. The walk is short and mostly flat.
When you arrive, you’ll notice a fence surrounding the opening in the cave’s roof. Please stay behind it. The limestone around the opening is unstable, and climbing over the barrier can be dangerous.
Other Things to Do Near Benagil Cave
If you’re making the trip to Benagil Cave, I’d recommend turning it into a full day rather than simply driving there for your tour.

Praia da Marinha
Just a few minutes east of Benagil, Praia da Marinha is one of Portugal’s most photographed beaches. It’s known for its golden limestone cliffs, sea arches, and clear turquoise water. Even if you aren’t planning to swim, the clifftop viewpoints are worth the stop.
Hike the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
This coastal trail connects Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes, passing dramatic cliffs, sinkholes, beaches, and panoramic viewpoints along the way. If you don’t have time for the full hike, I’d still recommend walking a short section near Benagil Cave.
Visit Carvoeiro
Carvoeiro is only about a 10-minute drive away and makes a great place to stop for lunch after your tour. The town has a beautiful waterfront, several seafood restaurants, and easy access to the Algar Seco Boardwalk, where you’ll find more impressive limestone formations and sea views.
Visit Lagos
If you’re staying in Lagos, you’re already in one of my favourite towns in the Algarve.
I spent several days here wandering the historic centre, visiting the Núcleo Museológico Rota da Escravatura, walking to Ponta da Piedade, and enjoying the cafés and restaurants around town.
My Recommendation After Visiting Benagil Cave
Benagil Cave is popular for a reason. Whether you visit by boat or kayak, seeing the cave from the water is one of the most memorable experiences you can have in the Algarve.
Personally, I’d choose a kayak tour every time. I loved exploring the coastline at a slower pace and getting a close-up look at the cliffs, arches, and smaller sea caves along the way.
Whichever tour you choose, I’d also recommend taking the time to visit more of the surrounding area. Walk part of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, stop at Praia da Marinha, or spend the afternoon in Carvoeiro or Lagos.
Benagil Cave might be the highlight, but there’s plenty more to see along this stretch of Portugal’s coastline.
