I visited Benagil Cave on a kayaking tour from Benagil Beach during a December trip to the Algarve. Even in winter, the experience was incredible.
The sun was shining, the sea was calm, and there were far fewer crowds than you would find during the busy summer months. Paddling along the coastline, exploring hidden sea caves, and entering Benagil Cave itself ended up being one of the highlights of my time in Portugal.

What is the Benagil Cave in Algarve?
Benagil Cave is the most famous sea cave in the Algarve. It’s a spectacular rock formation with a large opening in its roof, often referred to as “the eye.” Sunlight streams through this natural skylight, illuminating the cave’s golden sandstone walls and creating one of the most recognizable scenes in Portugal.
The cave is quite large and contains a small sandy beach inside. While visitors used to be allowed to step onto the sand, current regulations prohibit disembarking inside the cave in order to improve safety and protect the site.
There are two main ways to visit Benagil Cave from Lagos. The easiest option is to join an Algarve boat tour that departs directly from Lagos and brings you to the cave by sea.
Alternatively, you can make your own way from Lagos to Benagil Beach, where you’ll find a variety of guided kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and boat tours departing throughout the day.
Best Time of Year to Visit Benagil Cave
You can visit Benagil Cave at any time of year, but the experience varies significantly by season. Summer brings hot weather and calm seas, but it is also the busiest time of year, with large crowds both inside and outside the cave.
If you’re looking for a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder or off-season (roughly late September through May). Although it’s a bit chillier at this time of year, it’s often still very sunny.
I decided to go on a kayaking tour of Benagil Cave in December, and I was glad I chose that over the high season.
During the summer there are tons of tourists in the Algarve region. Our kayaking guide told us visiting Benagil in midsummer can be frustrating because there is so much traffic entering and exiting the cave. During winter in the Algarve, there’s far fewer crowds which makes for a nicer experience.
What are the opening hours for Benagil Cave?
Benagil Cave is open all year round. I visited in the winter, and it was a great experience. Visiting the cave is typically possible during daylight hours, depending on the season and the tides.

How to Get to Benagil Cave From Lagos by Car
The access point to Benagil Cave is Benagil Beach, which is just outside the Algarve town of Carvoeiro. From the center of Carvoeiro, it’s just a 15 minute drive to the beach.
The simplest way to get to Benagil Cave from Lagos is to drive. The last two times I was in the Algarve, I got a car rental, and I did not regret it. Lagos is a perfect home base for visiting other Algarve towns and regions, and having a car makes day trips from Lagos convenient. For example, with a car you can visit Ferragudo from Lagos, and day trip to Silves, too.

How to drive to Benagil Cave from Lagos?
The simplest way to get to Benagil Cave is to drive. The driving distance between Lagos to Benagil is 35 kilometers, and the drive takes approximately 35 minutes. From Lagos, you’ll get on either the A22, or the N125, which will take you all the way to Carvoeiro. Exit at Carvoeiro, and then from there, head east on the N114 toward Almancil. There is a sign for Benagil Beach. Follow this until you reach the beach.
Where can you park to visit Benagil Beach and Cave?
There is a small car-park near Benagil Beach where you can park your car. There is plenty of signage that will guide you to the parking lot. From the parking lot, you can then walk downhill, following the signs towards Praia de Benagil. You’ll rent a boat or catch your tour from this beach.
3 Benagil Cave Tours Worth Booking
You now know how to get yourself from Lagos to Benagil Cave. The next step is choosing a tour that will take you out onto the water and into the cave.
There are several different types of Benagil Cave tours, including speedboat, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard excursions. One important thing to know is that these tours depart from different locations.
If you have a rental car, you’ll have the flexibility to choose from tours departing from Benagil Beach, Carvoeiro, Lagos, and other nearby towns. If you don’t have a car, you’ll likely want to choose a tour that departs directly from Lagos or includes transportation from Lagos to the departure point.
Most kayak and SUP tours depart from Benagil Beach, so if paddling into the cave is your goal, you’ll usually need to arrange your own transportation to the beach first. Meanwhile, several boat tours depart directly from Lagos, making them a convenient option for travelers without a vehicle.

How to Get to Benagil Cave From Lagos by Car

Can You Visit Benagil Cave Without a Tour?
No, you can’t legally visit the inside of Benagil Cave on your own. Due to local maritime regulations designed to improve safety and protect the cave, independent access by swimming, unguided kayak, or stand-up paddleboard is prohibited.
Visitors who want to enter the cave must be part of a licensed boat, kayak, or SUP tour.
It’s also important to know that visitors are not permitted to disembark onto the small beach inside the cave. Most tours allow you to admire the cave from the water while your guide navigates through the area safely.
If you prefer not to join a tour, you can still visit the clifftop viewpoint above Benagil Cave. A short walk along the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail leads to the cave’s famous skylight, where you can look down into the cave from above free of charge.
How to See Benagil Cave From Above
The Benagil Sea Cave has a big hole in its roof (the eye!), and so it’s possible to look down into the cave from above. To see the cave this way doesn’t require a tour or water equipment, it’s totally free.
From the top of Benagil Cave, you can see Praia de Benagil below and also Praia do Pego which has a beautiful cove with clear waters.
The walk to the top of Benagil is part of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, which goes from Centeanes Valley Beach to Marinha Beach. You can do the entire trail, or you can just do the small section of it that goes up to the top of Benagil.
To reach the viewpoint, start at Praia de Benagil. From the beach, walk up the hill on the eastern (right-hand) side toward the clifftop. Near the restaurant O Algar, you’ll see a parking lot and a dirt road. Follow the dirt road and you’ll quickly connect with the trail leading to the famous opening above the cave.
Once you’re on the path, follow it to the right until you reach the crater of Benagil Cave. You’ll recognize it right away because the crater is fenced off. All around the hole are tall, wooden fences to keep people from getting too close to the hole.
Do not climb over the fence! It’s there because the ground around the crater is very unstable. Walking on it could cause it to collapse. Please be careful.
8 Must-Know Tips For Visiting Benagil Cave
Before heading to Benagil to explore the beach, cave, and trails above, be sure to note these tips! They cover practical knowledge, as well as how you can be a responsible tourist when visiting this famous sea cave.
1. Follow local rules and regulations
Benagil Cave has become one of Portugal’s most popular natural attractions, which means there are rules in place to protect both visitors and the cave itself. Before your visit, familiarize yourself with the latest regulations and listen to any instructions provided by your guide.
Current rules prohibit swimming to the cave, entering by unguided kayak or paddleboard, and stepping onto the beach inside the cave. These measures are designed to improve safety, reduce congestion, and help preserve the site for future visitors. By respecting local regulations, you can help ensure Benagil Cave remains a safe and enjoyable place to visit.
2. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water on your Benagil Cave tour
In Portugal, the sun shines all year long, so make sure you protect yourself from the harsh rays of the sun! I recommend using reef-safe sunscreen. You might also want to bring a hat to shield your face from the bright light, and a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
3. Bring a dry bag for your valuables
If you are going by kayak or SUP you will need a dry bag to protect your phone, wallet, and any other valuables you might bring. If you go with a tour company, they will likely provide you a dry bag for free (the company I went with did!), or you’ll have the option to rent one.
It’s also a good idea to leave valuables at home, like expensive jewelery. You don’t want to risk losing anything of value while enjoying the Algarve coast, so it’s best to leave the fine jewelry at home (especially if you’re visiting the cave by SUP or kayak).
4. Be cautious if bringing camera gear
I debated this before going for my kayak tour to Benagil Cave Algarve. Because my camera is expensive, and my baby, I decided against bringing it on the kayak with me *just in case* I capsized.
I might have been able to fit it in my dry bag, but that felt a bit risky. I opted to bring just my phone, which has a decent camera. I know plenty of folks who have brought their camera gear into the cave though, so it can be done!
5. Visit Benagil Cave Algarve in the off-season
Visiting Benagil Cave during the off-season (roughly October to May) is one of the most sustainable travel choices you can make. Fewer visitors means less pressure on the cave, beaches, and surrounding coastline, while also creating a more enjoyable experience with fewer crowds.
I visited in December and loved it. The weather was still sunny enough for kayaking, and there was far less boat traffic than during the busy summer months. Traveling in the off-season also helps support local businesses throughout the year, rather than concentrating tourism spending into a short peak season.
6. Shop, eat, and stay local in the Algarve
One of the best ways to make a positive impact while traveling is to support locally owned businesses whenever possible. When you choose family-run guesthouses, independent hotels, local tour operators, neighbourhood restaurants, and small shops, more of your tourism dollars are likely to stay within the community.
This helps create jobs, supports local entrepreneurs, and ensures that the people who live in the Algarve benefit directly from tourism. It can also lead to a more authentic travel experience. Rather than eating at international chains or staying in large resorts, you’ll have more opportunities to try regional dishes, meet local residents, and learn about the culture and traditions that make the Algarve unique.
7. Travel as slowly as possible in the Algarve
Rather than ticking off as many destinations as possible in a trip to Europe or Portugal, spend a few extra days at every stop. A slow travel approach means you can engage more with the communities that you visit, see more of a place, and invest more tourism dollars into local businesses.
8. Pack in and pack out
One of the easiest ways to help protect Benagil Cave and the Algarve coastline is to leave no trace of your visit. “Pack in, pack out” means taking everything you bring with you back out again, including food wrappers, drink containers, tissues, and any other waste.
Even seemingly harmless items like fruit peels, nutshells, or biodegradable materials shouldn’t be left behind. The cave and surrounding coastline are part of a sensitive natural environment, and litter can negatively impact wildlife and marine ecosystems. If you generate any waste during your adventure, hold onto it until you can dispose of it properly in a garbage or recycling bin back on shore.
Is Visiting Benagil Cave Worth It?
Yes, Benagil Cave is absolutely worth visiting from Lagos.
While there are plenty of beautiful beaches, cliffs, and sea caves along the Algarve coast, Benagil stands out for a reason. Seeing sunlight pour through the cave’s famous “eye,” watching the waves as they crash around the cave, and seeing the coastline by kayak or boat is a super memorable experience.
If you can, I recommend visiting outside the peak summer season. Not only will you encounter fewer crowds, but you’ll have a better chance to appreciate the natural beauty of the cave without competing with dozens of boats and kayaks for space.
